Media Exam
Two parts to the exam:1. Tv Drama
2. Institutions and Audiences (Film)
What impact does media ownership have upon the range of products available to audiences in the media area you have studied?
Range of products- film/dvds/film online/merchandise/ film soundtracks/studios and theme parks
Media ownership- Global US make tv programme and films/UK make specific references to working title and smaller films/independent films
how does it effect a film when it is the big Hollywood 6 who can make it
what are the strengths of Hollywood
How difficult it is for the independent film
film made by the big 6 have a very smooth passage because of horizontal distribution. film made by Hollywood have an easier passage then film made by independent countries (here talk abut big 6 and the horizontal distribution) next bit of the essay talk about British film industry has to compete internationally and globally- difficult but one company finds it easier that others (working title) because it has universal as a parent company. independent film struggle most of all
"Media production is dominated by global institution which sell their products and services to national audiences." To what extent do you agree with this statement?
Agree with the first bit however it doesn't just sell the products and serves to national audiences but rather international audiences.
Mention Independent (Indie) + national (working title) institution without the small institutions we wouldn't have the arty films such as 'tinker tailor solider. The surprising thing is a smaller industry does have global reach because the content of British films does have global interest 'Sherlock Holmes' best selling narrative. International audiences like america do have an interest in British history. All the films about past and current royal family has global interest,'The Queen', tapped into Princess Diana death.
Big 6 (global institution have limitation in what they show. play safe by making prequels, sequals and super hero films. doesn't allow room for artistic films like the life of Pi- without the British independence film makers we would not have art house films, films about social issues, films that take risks, we would have fewer films that develop character rather than plot (DANNY BOYLE)
2012 refer to the Hunger games and to 2012 Avengers Assemble became so big through its distribution tactics, had a website with a marketing schedule behind it. fans were behind it all the way, movie tie in with the book, game players were allowed to vote for their district on the site, so film fans was engaged before the film was launched.
Commenting with global markets that kept small was the inbetweeners was tv spin off and beat all records of most successful British comedy, did this by building on the tv series, particular audience teenagers and young adults.
Les Miserable (standing in national film industry) however i disagree that thats the only part of the story. they may dominate but there is a large slice of film industry which have global reach.
lottery money funds- helps independent national films
